Not much has happened in the two weeks that we've been off of the trail. Brian's ankle is still swollen and ready to flair up, as is his knee, so I run to stay in shape and he takes it easy. We've been working our way up the coast towards Oregon, winding our way through more Giant Sequoias, the north coast and Redwoods National Park for the past two weeks. Today, we reached the state line and are finally out of California and into Oregon. We were in California for three full months and now we are both ready to move on. To Crater Lake we go today. It is 1,900 ft deep (the deepest lake in the US), and supposedly so blue that it looks like ink.
Since we are off of the trail, we are making our way home. If we can't walk the trail, we should be doing the things that we've always wanted to do in our own great state: canoe the whole AuSable river, tour the UP, etc. We will be driving and camping through Oregon and Washington, then taking a route across the top of the US back to the mitten. While we are sad about not hiking much any more, we are a little anxious to get home.
In an effort to escape the day to day, we are going on a long walk. Through 3 states, 60 major mountain passes, 19 major canyons, past over 1000 lakes, through 3 national monuments, 7 national parks, 24 national forests, 33 federally mandated wildernesses, across the San Andreas fault 3 times, from Mexico to Canada, 2671 miles, the Pacific Crest Trail.
